Lili Fugit

So I drove out to the Tejon Pass, which is north of Los Angeles, when Christo did the yellow umbrellas. I used to go hunting out there, and I'm real familiar with the area, and as I drove into the pass, which is a pretty deep valley, suddenly there were these bright yellow giant umbrellas up and down along the freeway. I actually was expecting to not be impressed. I thought it was a lame idea, truth be told. And instead it totally took me out of a familiar zone and put me in a kind of strange alien landscape that was all the stranger for being familiar. It was like being in a dream.

After that I too was a convert to the notion of public art, and particularly to their (Christo's and Jeanne-Claude's) version of it. Whenever someone would scoff and say "Well THAT'S weird" I would say Yeah, it is, you have NO IDEA.
